Russula perlactea Murrill. Cap 3-8cm across, soon flattened-depressed; pure white with a creamy yellow center; dry, smooth. Gills close; broad; white. Stem 25-80 x 10-15mm, fragile; white. Flesh white. Odor pleasant. Taste instantly, painfully hot. Spores ovoid, 9-10 x 7-8.5µ; warts 0.7-1.3µ high, mostly isolated with a few fine connectives. Deposit white (A). Habitat in mixed woods. Found in New York and New Jersey. Season September-October. Not edible. Comment A beautiful species easily recognized by the combination of white cap and hot taste. |
